The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday morning that 192 small businesses in New Hanover County were receiving grants from a fund of more than $ 4 million.

The businesses are in the hospitality, retail and service industries, and the one-time grants are intended to offset the $ 65 million in lost revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and local restrictions and states put in place to slow the spread of the virus.

The program awarded grants of $ 10,000 for businesses with 2 to 10 employees, $ 25,000 for 11 to 25 employees and $ 50,000 for 26 or more employees.

According to a press release from the chamber, grant recipients represent up to 3,700 local employees. About 650 companies applied and 192 companies fulfilled all the conditions for the grant.

New Hanover County will fund 106 businesses with $ 2.3 million and the city of Wilmington will fund 86 businesses with $ 1.9 million, the statement said.

“Our small businesses have suffered during the pandemic and need help recovering,” said Julia Olson-Boseman, chair of the New Hanover County Commissioners. “The County of New Hanover and the City of Wilmington are focused on helping local business owners with cash they need to create jobs and jumpstart our economy.

“Now is the second time New Hanover County has appropriated federal relief funds to provide a lifeline to our local businesses after we pledged $ 1.3 million in CARES Act funds in the year. last for small businesses. I appreciate the city’s partnership, which has taken this assistance program so much further and I appreciate that the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce has come together to administer the program. “

Of the 192 scholarship recipients, 136 are minority, women or veteran owned businesses.

“Wilmington small business owners and their employees are vital to Wilmington’s economy and have endured tremendous challenges during the pandemic,” Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said in the statement. “With the help of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, we are quickly and fairly returning millions of dollars to local small businesses to support a large-scale economic recovery.”

Wilmington Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Natalie English said, “We know that our hospitality, retail and service businesses are a vital part of our local economy. New Hanover County will be stronger with this significant grant investment that will save money and create new jobs.
