UCLA Dining brings fresh Mediterranean cuisine to Ackerman Union

In a first for the campus’ more than 100-year history, UCLA Housing-Dining opened its first restaurant in Union Ackerman.

Epicuria at Ackerman, located on the first floor in space previously occupied by Wolfgang Puck Express, opened earlier this month and offers simple Mediterranean recipes infused with fresh, local ingredients.

Al Ferrone, senior director of food and beverage at UCLA Dining, and his team opened Epicuria in Covel, an all-you-can-eat restaurant, in the fall of 2021. The new restaurant is not all-you-can-eat, but just like at home location, meal plan holders can use their “shots” to pay. BruinCard EasyPay, credit and debit card payments can also be used. No cash is accepted and the restaurant is tip-free.

“Furthermore, we are thrilled to introduce the incredible quality of our catering program, which is once again ranked #1 in the country this year, to the rest of the campus community, as well as campus visitors” , Ferrone said, adding that the restaurant will also serve beer and wine once its license is finalized.

The restaurant’s name is inspired by the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus, said Al Ferrone, senior director of catering at UCLA Dining, which oversees 10 residential restaurants, as well as Plateia, an award-winning restaurant at the UCLA Meyer Conference Center and Renee Luskin. .

“Epicurus believed that living a life of simplicity was the way to attain all the comforts and pleasures of the world,” Ferrone said. “It includes simple cooking methods, simple recipes, and enjoying simple meals in the company of other people.”
